Shigeko Kubota Interview (1982) — Video Data Bank

Interview with Jeanine Mellinger · Published by Video Data Bank · Recorded 1983 (historical)

For Shigeko Kubota, the video image-making process is a cultural and personal experience. She explored cross-cultural relationships in her video diaries—transient images captured while traveling—her “comparative videology.” She also combined fleeting video images with the objecthood of sculptural form in her series inspired by Duchamp. “I’m a sculptor,” Kubota says. “I want to make video, but I also want to make objects. The video part is my mirror for my memory, or my life, but the object is creating my creation.”
